Butrus / O ’ Neill winners of presidential race Majority wins on first ballot for first time in seven years

Greg Butrus and Molly O’Neill won M onday ’s s tu de n t body presidential election when their tic k e t won a m a jo r ity o f the votes cast in the fo u rt ic k e t race. Butrus and O’N eill received 2,058 votes, which represented 50.8% o f the to ta l e lectorate. T he ir closest r iva ls were Ge­ orge Smith and Mike Goodwin, who polled 915 votes (22.6%). Dave C erto and M a tth e w Bomberger finished th ird w ith 598 votes (14.7%). Fourth place went to Rich Delevan and Joe Wilson, who received 362 votes (8.9% ). W rite in cand idates obtained 122 votes (3.0%). W ith th e ir m a jo rity v ic to ry, Butrus and O’Neill w ill not have to participate in a run-o ff elec­ tion w ith the second place fin ­ ishers. The last time a presi­ den tia l e lection was decided w ithout a run-o ff was in 1985. 64.4% o f e lig ib le s tuden ts voted in the election, up from 59.5% la s t year. E le c tion s Commissioner Travis Reindl at­ tributed some of the increased turnout to the three additional p o llin g places set up fo r o ffcampus students, which helped to boost o ff-cam pus s tuden t p a r t ic ip a t io n fro m 1.0 % to 9.3%. The elections committee also received via telephone 31 votes from overseas students, com­ pared to none last year. Stanford Hall residents came out overwhelmingly for Butrus/ O’N e ill, g iv ing th e ir h a ll co­ president and his running rate 228 out of the 241 votes cast in the dorm.
